Author: Brook Harris

Evangeline Andrews doesn’t want him, but she needs him. Julian Harte doesn’t need anyone, but he wants her.

Eva has been passed over her whole life. A happy home, men, fashion sense…it all eludes her. She’s run away from New Jersey to find sanctuary in Dublin. But the office bitch, a nymphomaniac best friend and the nice-guy-she’s-just-not-sure-about all threaten to complicate things.

The company social event of the year is looming. Everyone who’s anyone in the office will be at the masquerade ball. Eva has been invited, well, instructed to attend by her mysterious boss - or else. But she can’t go alone.

Enter Julian Harte, a sexy escort with a fascination for games. Eva is about to learn the rules are complicated and Julian doesn’t do losing.

Will Eva’s thick skin be enough to protect her when all the masks come down? Or will she discover she’s not the only one wearing more than one mask?

Let the games begin.

Welcome to the ultimate game of the heart...indeed! This book had me reading until 3:00 a.m. without a second thought. The storyline was intriguing and Julian Harte was a tasty treat wrapped in a suit. Julian didn't only plays games, he was a thief as well, because he stole my heart and knickers all in one swoop. Eva was but a shy wallflower, going unnoticed by everyone, until  she unknowingly caught someone's eye. She gets entangled in a web of lust, games, and confusion by the mysterious Julian Harte.

"He was cocky and arrogant. But sexy and manly. Part of her wanted to grab him and slap him across the face, the other part wanted to push him back on her bed and fuck him until he exploded inside her."

Eva made a somewhat uncharacteristic and impulsive decision one day while scrolling the internet, which led her to chatting with a male escort. She was desperate to break from her sheltered mold, and she set the upcoming ball for her work as her unavailing of sorts. Julian Harte was immediately intrigued by Eva and wanted to see her inner confidence blossom. He was straight forward with her about his love for playing games and reminded her she was a willing participant. The emotions that Julian provoked from her were intense and exciting, but also scared her at the same time.

"You're so fucking beautiful, Evangeline."

"Thank you," Eva all but whispered as tears glistened in her eyes.

For the first time in her life, she really believed a man when he complimented her. Julian didn't say it because he wanted something in return. She knew he said it because he wanted her to believe it, to feel it. And she did. And she adored him for it in that moment.

Eva's deep seeded insecurities stem from a troubling past that she tries very hard to leave behind her. Julian's ploys help her to overcome some of these demons, while having the hottest sex of her life on top of it. Well that all sounds fantastic right...a win win? Unfortunately her feelings catch up with her, and she struggles to stay ahead of all these games. She begins to question if she can continue to play this risky game when her heart was beginning to become an unwilling participant.

"It was as if he possessed her. He had her mind, her body, her soul and she was happy to give them to him. But she just wished she could have his in return."

Julian outwardly seemed to be in compete control of his life and emotions, but buried deep within was a battered heart. Eva wanted to be the one to help mend those pieces, but he would have to let her in to do so, which was something he refused to do. Meanwhile, her mysterious boss suddenly takes a surprising interest in her, and things become twisted and tangled. Julian is both good and bad for her. How does she decide what is best for her? When she thinks she has a grasp on the game, she gets thrust into yet another unknown direction. Everything seemed to lead up to the ball becoming the place for the last showdown to commence. All the foreshadowing parts of the game come together that night. Will everything finally come together, or will it just lead to more games and questions?

"He told her all along it was a gam, he'd literally given her a personal goddamn handbook and he'd still managed to play her. Fuck."

Who needs a prince, when you got a sexy as sin, broken bad boy?! Believe me I love a good fixer upper, but Julian was hell bent that he couldn't be fixed. He was so focused on fixing Eva, that she really didn't stand a chance at helping him, not while she was still broken that is.

"I'm not Prince Charming Evangeline. But I will protect you from everyone I need to, including you."

This book was a fantastic switch up from what I have been reading lately. I thoroughly enjoyed Julian and the connection that he and Eva shared. When they came together, they ignited the pages with a fiery inferno. I thought the concept of his game was a good one for the the most part. There were times, mainly towards the end, that it got a bit too much with the rules an the whole concept in general. The other part that bugged me a bit, was the whole office dynamic with the women so willingly signing up to be used. I guess it's my inner Sheera within, that thought the whole idea that at the ball a woman was chosen like an object was chauvinistic and a bit farfetched. Oh, and I immediately figured out the main mystery in the book, but I didn't really mind it being obvious because I didn't sign up for a mystery thriller. These things are easily overlooked though, because the rest of the story was enthralling and kept me reading late into the wee hours of the night. Hold on tight to your lady birches, because Julian Harte is set on melting them right off! I can't wait for the next book in the series. Be sure to keep your eye out on this series and amazing author.

"He's worked so hard to never get close to anyone. And he wasn't about to let all that work be in vain. And he wasn't about to let all that work be in vain. But right now, she needed him. Emotional barriers or not, he couldn't abandon her. He had to protect her. He'd think about everything else tomorrow."

Eva waited until everyone left the office before clicking on the link she had bravely searched for earlier. Casanova Agency appeared in a large, bold, grey font on a soft cream background. There was nothing else. No info, no contact details, nothing. Eva tried swishing her mouse back and forth hoping for an image to appear. Nothing. She pressed almost every key on her keyboard. Nothing. A little bile rushed into Eva’s mouth, and she forced it down with an awkward gulp. What if it was a dodgy site? The whole office system could go down and the IT guys would trace it back to her. Her desk, her PC and a bloody escort site.
She was about to shut the window when she spotted the four tiny letters in the bottom left corner of the screen. She clicked on shh and waited. Loading appeared in a small, spinning, circle centre-screen and a soft, violin solo began. She jumped before quickly hitting the mute button.
A phone number appeared on the screen. Nothing more. No picture, or bio or even a name. Eva tutted angrily. She hated clogged up, messy websites as much as the next person but this minimalist crap was ridiculous. She wasn’t about to phone some random stranger. The site was a waste of her time, and just made her feel more pathetic. She was about to shut the browser when an instant message popped up.
Julian: Curious?’-
Eva’s struggled to breathe. She was getting dizzy from her eyes darting around the office frantically, and the inside of her lip couldn’t handle much more chewing.
Julian: A little shy, are we?’-
Her fingers hovered over her keyboard. She wanted to reply; she just didn’t know what to say, or who she was saying it to.
Julian: Would you like my help?’-
Eva135: Do you always ask so many questions?’-
Julian: Do you?’-
Eva135: I’ve only asked one.’-
Julian: Is there more you would like to ask?’-
Eva pushed her chair back from her desk and tapped her pen on her knee. Well of course, she had questions. She had loads. Did this guy just wait around all day for women to click on his website? Who was he? How the hell does someone become an escort? Why the hell does someone become an escort?
Eva135: Ok. What’s your name?’-
Julian: Julian, I thought that was obvious.’-
Evangeline’s cheeks flushed. Even cyber conversation made her look stupid.
Eva135: How old are you?’-
Julian: Don’t be greedy, Evangeline. You’ve had your question. It’s my turn. Why do you want an escort?’-
Eva135: How do you know my name?’-
Julian: Again, Evangeline, if you would like an answer to your question you must answer mine first.’-
Eva stood up. Did he seriously expect an answer? She paced the floor dramatically and was only drawn back to her screen by the subtle tone of a new message.
Julian: Are you still there?’-
Eva135: Yes.’-
Julian: Good. I thought you had run away. Are you going to answer my question?’-
Eva135: I just answered one of your questions. It’s my turn again. Aren’t those the rules?’-
Julian: Feisty. I like that. And you understand rules. I like that even more. Okay, Evangeline let’s play by some rules.’-
Eva135: How do you know my name?’-
Julian: Your user name, it’s not hard to work out. Really, Evangeline. I find it hard to believe you don’t have a better question than that. I like you so I’m going to let you take another turn.’-
Eva135: Isn’t that against the rules?’-
Julian: My game, my rules. You’ve just used another question. It’s my turn.-‘
Evangeline poked herself in the knee with her pen. Damn he was good at this, but she had studied psychology for three years, there was no way she was going to let him beat her. She was ready to up her game.
Eva135: Okay, Julian. Your question.’-
Julian: Why do you want an escort?’-
 Eva135: I don’t know if I do…’-
                  Julian is offline.

Author Low Down:

Brooke has too many of a lot of things; shoes, books, and kids. Luckily she loves them all to pieces. She never has too much wine, if you believe that.

Rules of Harte is her debut into the steamy stuff and she's currently working on the second book in the series.
