Title: Mr. X
Author: Clarissa Wild
Publication Date: July 21, 2014
Genre: Dark Romance
He’s come to kill me.

I’m a user and abuser of my own body. In my darkest hour I sold my soul to the devil and now I must pay the price. With his gun to my head I have no choice but to listen and obey, but I refuse to go down easily. Nothing is stronger than the will to survive. My instincts kicked into full gear the second he stepped into my motel room.

Except when I look at him I see my own heart staring back at me. A history tainted by blood.

I don’t know his name, but I know he wants me. To save myself I’ll sacrifice my sanity. My body. My soul. Something tells me the x-shaped scar that marks his eye is the only escape I have. He is Mr. X: the man who comes to claim my life. Can I save myself before he demands my heart?

WARNING: This book contains very disturbing situations, dubious consent, breath deprivation, strong language, drugs and alcohol, and graphic violence.

Holy gritty darkness Batman! I know I was fairly warned, but I was still blown away at some of the crazy intensity of Mr. X. He was hands down one deeply disturbed, flawed, broken character--but enthralling nonetheless. This one is definitely not for the faint at heart, so if you were looking for a white knight riding over a rainbow on a unicorn, then look elsewhere because Mr. X is unapologetically dark and feels no remorse for it. After reading the blurb alone, I knew I was in store for a rough ride, so I strapped myself in and hoped for the best (living life on the edge over here).

"Whatever choice I make, this won't end well. Both our lives have been at stake since the moment I entered this room. The only question left is: who will surrender first?" -X

Well if you haven't received the memo yet, Mr. X is an assassin who was sent to kill Jay, but when he walks into that room he unexplainably has a change of heart and decides to keep her for himself. This sets off a disastrous ripple effect, which forces them to flee and fight for their lives. What Jay doesn't know, is that she and Mr. X have been connected for a very long time, she just can't remember. Not only is she inexplicably drawn to him, but she struggles with the feeling of familiarity he provokes in her.

"If I'm going to survive this I need to play on his feelings. Play on his heart, if he even has one. There's something he isn't telling me, and it's the only thing that is keeping him from killing me, apparently." - Jay

Jay's backwards attempt to play with his apparent emotional connection he has with her, ends up biting her in the ass. For one, her attempt to temper her will to fight is much harder than she thought it would be. Secondly, her own emotions begin to get twisted the more she is around him. X has his own flip flop of emotions that he struggles to tame within himself. He is fueled by revenge but entwined with lust (and maybe something more).

"I won't kill her yet. No, that's too easy of an escape. She'll be my seductress, my little bird, and I'll be the monster in the dark claiming her." -X

The past that X and Jay share is sprinkled in throughout the book, and we have to, of course, wait till the end to find out exactly what happened to X and why she can't remember. X was raised to be a killer...quite literally groomed for the family killing business. While other 9 year olds were learning long division, X was getting his first taste of his future life as a killer. Jay's past wasn't peaches and flowers either seeing as her father was the one who hired X and his family in the first place. Secrets slowly become unlocked, but by the time all is bared can Jay's heart survive it all? Will X ever be able to give her the one thing she has been desperate for...the freedom of choice. He wanted to claim her body, but what will happen when he has claimed her heart?

"He wants me. An equal. Someone to loathe this world with. He ruins me. He is my affliction. My drug. The one who saved me from eternal agony. The one who now burns for my mistakes. I'm a sinner." -Jay

I went back and forth with a rainbow of contrasting emotions with this book. There were some really intense thought provoking moments that filled my highlighted notes on my Kindle to the max. But there were also some growl inspiring moments, which caused some unquestionable frustration for me. I figured out pretty quickly why X was filled with such anger and wild revenge towards Jay. The part I struggled with was the justification of those feelings. I guess I expected something else to eventually be added in there to really solidify the level of revenge that coursed through him. That being said, I still enjoyed the book and the crazed grittiness of it. I appreciate the fact that X stayed true to his monster within. In some books, the dark characters start off disturbed, then become way too soft to make the character truly genuine. X apologies to no one for who he has become, and even though he willingly admits his feelings for Jay, his darkness never wavers.  I would definitely recommend this book to my fellow readers out there who love some dark grit to their love stories.
